West Vincent Township police are alerting residents to take preventative measures after a black bear was observed in the area. The bear was captured on security footage taking a bag of garbage from a resident’s backyard.
Bear Spotted on Camera
The police department shared a nighttime video on social media showing the bear entering a yard, navigating near a covered boat, and successfully stealing a small trash bag. Authorities believe the bear is likely traveling through the area in search of food and a convenient path.
Preventing Wildlife Encounters
While black bears are typically not aggressive and generally avoid humans, the police department stresses the importance of taking precautions for the safety of both residents and the animal. Residents are encouraged to contact 911 if they spot the bear or observe any concerning behavior, allowing officers to monitor the situation and inform the Pennsylvania Game Commission.
Securing Food Sources
To minimize attractants, residents are advised to store pet food indoors. Removing bird feeders temporarily is also recommended. Garbage cans should be secured and placed out for collection only on the morning of pickup, not the night before.
Additional Safety Measures
Residents should also be mindful of their pets, particularly during dawn and dusk. Cleaning grills and outdoor cooking areas thoroughly will help prevent attracting the bear’s attention. These steps are crucial not only for community safety but also to prevent the bear from becoming accustomed to human food, which could lead to more dangerous interactions.
