Singer Paloma Faith has opened up about her varied experiences with breastfeeding, sharing a heartfelt post on Instagram six months after welcoming her third child.
Breastfeeding Experiences with Each Child
The 44-year-old musician, known for her distinctive voice and style, has two daughters aged nine and five, and a son born in March. In her candid message, Faith detailed the significant differences in her breastfeeding journeys with each child, emphasizing the importance of self-compassion and releasing the pressure to conform to expectations.
Early Challenges with Daughters
Faith revealed that breastfeeding her first two daughters was considerably more challenging. She described the pain as intense and acknowledged the pressure she felt to persevere. With her first daughter, she endured seven months of discomfort, driven by stubbornness and societal expectations.
Her second daughter presented a different hurdle – difficulty coordinating breathing and swallowing during feeds, leading to screaming. This resulted in Faith exclusively pumping for three months before accepting it wasn’t working for them, an experience she found liberating, allowing her to focus on bonding with her child.
A Smoother Journey with Her Son
In contrast, Faith’s experience with her son has been markedly smoother. He latched on immediately, demonstrating an innate understanding of feeding. While she still experienced initial soreness and moments of wanting to give up, she persevered, utilizing strategies like fenugreek to maintain milk supply, feeding every four hours, and pumping twice daily.
As a precautionary measure, Faith incorporates a small amount of formula into her son’s diet, ensuring he won’t reject the taste should she ever need to rely on it in an emergency, given she has two other children.
Addressing Societal Pressures
Faith also addressed the societal pressure to ‘bounce back’ quickly after childbirth, stating her belief that prioritizing rapid physical recovery could negatively impact milk production. She felt she had already endured enough.
Her message is a powerful reminder that motherhood is multifaceted and that self-care is paramount. She explicitly stated that something always gives, regardless of the choices a mother makes, and encouraged fellow mothers to extend grace to themselves and each other.
Sharing Her Journey Visually
Faith’s post included a series of images illustrating her breastfeeding journey – photos of her nursing, using a breast pump, enjoying breakfast in bed with pumped milk, and a close-up of her breasts. She also expressed gratitude to @thisisyourbaby365 for their support and guidance in navigating feeding challenges, such as swollen ducts and pain.
The singer shares her daughters with her former partner, Leyman Lahcine, and her son with Stevie Thomas, with whom she confirmed her relationship in 2025. Her willingness to share her personal story serves as a validation for mothers facing similar challenges and a reminder that there is no single ‘right’ way to nourish a child.
