A new review of 41 international studies suggests that living in highly polluted areas significantly increases the risk of developing glaucoma and cataracts. A 70% higher risk of glaucoma in polluted zones

The most significant finding in the review involves a 70% increase in glaucoma odds for those living in high-pollution zones. According to the review, individuals in the most heavily polluted areas faced much higher chances of developing the condition compared to those in cleaner environments. Glaucoma, which involves damage to the optic nerve that carries visual data to the brain, is already a major public health concern in the United Kingdom, where it affects approximately one million people.

This research suggests that environmental factors may be accelerating eye diseases that are traditionally categorized as purely age-related. While aging remains a primary factor, the data indicates that the quality of the air a person breathes can influence their ocular health trajectory.

Scientists identified several specific pollutants that correlate with increased rates of eye disease. These include nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, ozone, carbon monoxide, and fine particulate matter.. Presenting the findings at the Congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, Dr. Alnabihi noted that clinicians often treat glaucoma and cataracts as inevitable, yet environmental exposures may be a missing piece of the puzzle.

Cataract risks also appear to rise in direct correlation with increased exposure to environmental pollutants.. In the United Kingdom,roughly one in three people over the age of 65 is affected by cataracts, a condition where the eye's lens becomes cloudy. The study suggests that as pollution levels rise, the frequency of these cloudy lenses may also increase.

There is currently no definitive answer as to how much a reduction in local pollution would specifically lower the incidence of vision loss, or which specific populations are most susceptible to these environmental shifts.
