Weill Cornell Medicine has reached a settlement exceeding $1 billion to resolve roughly 800 lawsuits. The legal resolution follows the criminal conviction of former urologist Dr. Darius Paduch, who was sentenced to life in prison.
Warnings dating back to 2006 and the 2015 failure to act
The legal crisis at Weill Cornell Medicine is rooted in a long history of unaddressed misconduct. According to the report, internal reviews dating back to 2006 already identified Dr. Darius Paduch as a volatile presence within the medical group.. Despite staff reporting inappropriate sexual language between 2012 and 2014, the institution failed to take decisive action to protect its patients.
The failure to protect patients appears to have been systemic rather than accidental. In 2015, a colleague informed the head of urology about a patient's accusation of sexual manipulation, yet no corrective measures were taken at that time. Furthermore, a 2018 complaint to the New York State Board of Professional Medical Conduct was reportedly mishandled by inexperienced staff who were unaware of Paduch's prior history of misconduct .
Even as late as 2019, the institution struggled to address the scope of the problem. After an internal investigation found that Paduch had waived $50,000 in medical bills for a patient who accused him of misconduct, his faculty renewal was denied, yet the broader patterns of behavior remained a critical issue for the medical group.
The $30 million WCM Institute for Safe Patient Care
As part of the massive $1 billion payout, Weill Cornell is establishing the WCM Institute for Safe Patient Care and Patient Empowerment. This $30 million initiative aims to foster better cooperation between hospitals, regulators, and law enforcement to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The settlement also mandates the creation of a monitoring panel to oversee sexual misconduct risks. This oversight is intended to remain in place until 2031, ensuring that the institution's new leadership maintains the reforms they claim have been implemented. A spokesperson for Weill Cornell stated that the institution is now safer under new executive leadership and has implemented significant reforms in patient safety and reporting protocols.
The 2024 conviction of Dr. Darius Paduch
The settlement follows the criminal proceedings against 59-year-old Dr. Darius Paduch, who was convicted in 2024 on six counts of sexual abuse. the abuse, which targeted young men and boys seeking treatment for infertility or sexual dysfunction, spanned more than a decade beginning in 2009.
The missing disclosures to Northwell Health
While the settlement provides financial restitution, significant questions remain regarding the scope of the institutional negligence. The report highlights that Weill Cornell did not disclose Paduch's history of allegations to Northwell Health, where he subsequently worked. This lack of transparency raises questions about the safety of patients at other institutions where Paduch may have practiced.
Additionally, there are lingering concerns about why the 2018 investigation was assigned to staff who were uninformed of previous complaints. It remains unclear how many other medical professionals may have been allowed to continue practicing despite known behavioral issues, and whether the new reforms will be sufficient to prevent future "criminal cover-ups," as described by the victims' attorneys.
