Jersey Shore star Nicole ‘Snooki’ Polizzi has revealed she will undergo a hysterectomy after receiving a diagnosis of stage 1 cervical cancer at the age of 38.
Cervical Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment
Polizzi initially shared her diagnosis in February, describing her initial reaction as one of fear. Subsequent testing showed the cancer was localized, and a hysterectomy is planned in the coming months as the extent of her treatment.
Importance of Regular Screenings
The reality television personality admitted to a history of abnormal Pap smear results, initially considered minor but requiring more frequent monitoring. She confessed to delaying follow-up appointments for a year and a half due to discomfort and avoidance.
Journey to Diagnosis
Polizzi first publicly discussed her experiences with abnormal Pap smears and precancerous cells on TikTok in January. She detailed the discomfort of a colposcopy and biopsy, ultimately leading to the detection of cancerous cells on her cervix.
Emotional Impact and Decision
A cone biopsy was scheduled for further evaluation. The possibility of a hysterectomy initially caused significant emotional distress for Polizzi, who is a mother of three children – Lorenzo (13), Giovanna (11), and Angelo (6) – with husband Jionni LaValle.
Despite her sadness at the thought of not having more children, Polizzi prioritized her health and well-being to be present for her family. She emphasized the necessity of the hysterectomy for her future health.
Support and Awareness
Polizzi has received an outpouring of support from her former Jersey Shore castmates, including Jenni Farley, Sammi ‘Sweetheart’ Giancola, Deena Cortese, and Lauren Sorrentino.
Her story serves as a reminder of the importance of regular cervical cancer screenings and the potential consequences of delayed medical attention. Polizzi hopes her experience will encourage others to prioritize their health and not avoid necessary procedures.
