Alex Osborne, the weather presenter for BBC South West, is transitioning to ITV after sixteen years with the BBC.
Osborne's Departure and New Role
Osborne announced her departure on X (formerly Twitter), expressing both sadness at leaving the BBC and enthusiasm for her future as a journalist with ITV. Her last day with the BBC is scheduled for May 4th.
The announcement was met with widespread support from colleagues and viewers, who offered congratulations and wished her well in her new position.
A Versatile Career at the BBC
Osborne began her journey with the BBC in 2010 as a live events showcase presenter. Throughout her tenure, she held various roles, including assistant producer/researcher for BBC Radio 3, project and events coordinator for BBC Proms & BBC Symphony Orchestra, travel presenter and entertainment reporter for BBC Radio Devon, and production assistant for BBC Factual Television.
Following Kirkwood's Farewell
This move comes after Carol Kirkwood’s recent emotional departure from BBC Breakfast after three decades of service. Kirkwood announced her decision to leave in January, wanting to spend more time with her husband, Steve Randall.
Kirkwood's Emotional Goodbye
Kirkwood’s final forecast on April 1st was accompanied by a moving video tribute featuring messages from numerous BBC stars, including Sue Barker, Vicky McClure, Paul Merton, Zoe Ball, Clare Balding, Chris Evans, and Sir Chris Hoy. Colleagues praised her engaging presence and ability to connect with viewers.
Further tributes came from Charlie Stayt, Louise Minchin, Sian Williams, Susanna Reid, and Dan Walker, who described her as ‘lovely, kind and caring’. A message from Bryan Adams also thanked her for her dedicated weather reports.
Looking Ahead
Osborne’s transition to ITV marks a significant career move, while the BBC loses a valued team member. The timing of both Osborne and Kirkwood’s departures raises questions about the future of weather presentation at the BBC.
Both presenters have expressed gratitude for their time at the BBC and excitement for their new opportunities.
