Monday's rollout for the 65-and-older priority group
The Ontario Ministry of Health announced on September 25, 2026, that an initial supply of flu and COVID-19 vaccines will be available starting Monday for those most susceptible to severe illness. This priority tier includes individuals aged 65 and older, as well as people who live, work, or study within the province and fall into high-risk categories. Specifically, the province is prioritizing hospitalized patients, hospital staff, and residents or staff working in retirement homes, long-term care facilities, and other congregate living settings.
Health Minister Sylvia Jones stated that the government is taking these steps as the respiratory illness season approaches to protect families and communities. By targeting these specific groups first,the Ontario government aims to reduce the immediate burden on the healthcare system by shielding those most likely to require hospitalization during a seasonal surge.
The October 26 window for general public access
For the majority of Ontarians who do not fall into the high-risk category, free flu and COVID-19 shots will become widely available starting October 26. According to the province, these immunizations will be administered through a network of participating pharmacies, public health units, and offices of participating doctors and nurse practitioners.
Minister Sylvia Jones emphasized that the province is working with healthcare partners to ensure that access to these shots is both timely and convenient for residents close to their homes. RSV protections for infants and the 75-and-older demographic
In addition to the standard flu and COVID-19 shots, Ontario is providing RSV vaccines to specific eligible groups.. Residents aged 75 and older, as well as those aged 60 to 74 who meet certain high-risk criteria or reside in higher-risk settings, are eligible for the RSV shot. Furthermore, starting October 1, the vaccine will be available for pregnant women, as well as newborns and infants up to eight months of age in their first RSV season.
The province is also extending RSV protection to high-risk children up to 24 months of age during their second RSV season. As the Ministry of Health reported, the risk of severe outcomes from RSV is particularly high for infants under six months and children under 24 months who suffer from neuromuscular disorders, congenital heart disease, chronic lung disease, or weakened immune systems.
