Health Risks Associated with Lead Exposure
The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) identified elevated lead levels during routine testing. Lead exposure poses significant health risks, especially to young children and pregnant women. Even low levels can lead to developmental delays and behavioral problems.
Severity of the Contamination
The FSIS reports that lead levels in the affected nuggets could be up to five times higher than the FDA’s interim reference level for children, highlighting the urgency of the recall.
What Consumers Should Do
Consumers who have purchased the affected chicken nuggets are urged not to consume them. They should either discard the product or return it to the place of purchase for a refund or replacement.
Ongoing Investigation
The FSIS is actively investigating the source of the lead contamination and working to prevent future occurrences. Dorada Foods, the manufacturer, has not yet responded to media requests for comment.
Further information on the recall can be found on the FSIS website.
