A French woman has been diagnosed with hantavirus following her evacuation from the MV Hondius cruise ship. She was among six French passengers transferred from the vessel, developing symptoms during her flight to Paris.
Widespread Infection Among Passengers
Sixteen American passengers also contracted the virus but remained asymptomatic. One additional passenger, flown to Nebraska, exhibited mild symptoms. The virus spread among the ship's occupants, prompting a coordinated evacuation effort.
Global Response and Monitoring
Spain played a key role in organizing the evacuation and subsequent monitoring of former passengers. The World Health Organization (WHO) emphasized the low public risk but urged home countries to implement active monitoring and daily health checks for affected individuals.
WHO Director-General's Statement
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reassured the public, stating, "The risk to the general population is low, but it is crucial for passengers' home countries to maintain vigilant monitoring and follow-up protocols."
