Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) trustee Maria Rizzo has launched a campaign to reinstate the board’s International Languages (IL) program, which is set to be discontinued this September. The decision puts 77 teaching jobs at risk and has sparked concerns among parents and educators.
Program Cancellation and Funding Concerns
The provincial government has ordered the program’s cancellation, citing a violation of the Education Act, which does not permit international languages to be taught during regular school hours. The program, which costs $6 million annually, is jointly funded by the TCDSB and the province.
Rizzo argues that the cost is justified, stating, “Scrimping a nickel or a dime is worth it to save the program as it’s important for students and families.” She has gathered support from fellow trustees, provincial, and federal politicians to advocate for its reinstatement.
Parental and Educational Concerns
Parents have expressed worry that eliminating the program will put TCDSB at a disadvantage compared to global education systems. The program’s phase-out begins in September, leaving many families concerned about the loss of cultural and linguistic education opportunities.
Rizzo’s campaign aims to reverse the decision, emphasizing the program’s value in fostering multilingualism and cultural diversity within the school board.
