British Columbia is addressing challenges in primary healthcare access with the launch of the Health Connect Registry. This province-wide initiative connects individuals without a family doctor or nurse practitioner to available healthcare providers.
Improving Access to Primary Care
The Health Connect Registry represents a significant step towards ensuring more British Columbians have consistent and reliable access to primary care. A strong patient-provider relationship is vital for preventative health, early disease detection, and managing chronic conditions.
How the Registry Works
Registering for the Health Connect Registry is a straightforward process. Residents need to provide their Personal Health Number (PHN), current home address, and contact details.
Individuals can also optionally share details about their health concerns to help attachment coordinators prioritize matches based on specific healthcare needs.
Matching Patients with Providers
Once registered, individuals are added to a secure, community-based list. Local attachment coordinators regularly review this list to connect patients with primary care providers who are accepting new patients.
The registry is specifically for B.C. residents without a family doctor or nurse practitioner. Those who already have a provider do not need to register.
Individuals previously on local clinic waitlists may already be included in the provincial registry and can re-register to confirm their information or maintain their position.
Continued Healthcare Access
While awaiting a match, residents can still access a range of healthcare services. The province’s 811 health service provides health advice, guidance, and referrals in over 130 languages.
Pharmacists can assist with minor ailments, prescription renewals, and contraceptives. Urgent and primary care centres offer same-day treatment for non-emergency medical needs.
Government Commitment
The Health Connect Registry complements existing services and demonstrates the provincial government’s commitment to improving healthcare access for all British Columbians. Continued outreach and collaboration will be key to the registry’s success.
