Ticketmaster is releasing thousands of tickets back to fans following the discovery of a significant scalping operation targeting Harry Styles’ upcoming New York City residency. The company successfully intercepted scammers utilizing fake accounts to resell tickets for profit and is offering a new request window for legitimate fans.

Addressing the Scalping Operation

Ticketmaster has actively intervened in a large-scale scalping operation where individuals used numerous fake accounts and fabricated identities to purchase tickets for resale at inflated prices. This practice undermines the ticketing system and exploits dedicated fans.

Exorbitant Prices and Transparency

Reports indicated VIP packages for Styles’ 30-night run at Madison Square Garden reached prices as high as $1,667, significantly exceeding reasonable market value. Saumil Mehta, President of Ticketmaster, addressed these concerns in a communication to fans, providing transparency about ticket distribution and the steps being taken to resolve the issue.

Recovered Tickets and Fan Reassurance

Ticketmaster confirmed it intercepted a substantial number of tickets acquired through fraudulent means – tickets that had not yet been transferred to any purchasers. These intercepted tickets are now being released back into the system for genuine fans at their original price.

Targeted Seats and No Impact to Legitimate Holders

Mehta highlighted that scalpers specifically targeted the most affordable and highly sought-after seats to maximize profits. He reassured fans that no legitimate ticket holders were affected by the cancellations and that those who purchased tickets directly through Ticketmaster or received transferred/resale tickets are unaffected.

Ticket Pricing and New Request Window

The company provided a breakdown of original ticket prices, noting that 77% were priced under $95, 19% at $50, and all under $130 including fees. To offer another opportunity, Ticketmaster is implementing a request system.

Request System Details

Interested individuals can submit requests for up to four tickets for two shows between noon EDT on April 30th and 5pm EDT on May 1st. Successful applicants will be automatically charged, with confirmation emails sent by 11:50pm EDT on May 8th.

Additional Context

This initiative follows a recent federal jury ruling that deemed Ticketmaster and Live Nation to have excessive control over major concert venues, a decision Live Nation intends to appeal. Separately, investigations are underway regarding $13 million in unaccounted public funds and traffic delays on the State Route 16 Tacoma Narrows Bridge.
