Comedian Suzy Eddie Izzard has spoken openly about her hopes of becoming a parent and her reflections on the loss of her mother in recent interviews.
Reflecting on Childhood Loss
During an appearance on the ‘ADHD! No You’re Not’ podcast with Paul Whitehouse and Dr. Mine Conkbayir, the 64-year-old Izzard discussed losing her mother, Dorothy, to cancer at the age of six. She noted that while the loss was profound, she doesn’t experience grief in the same way now, having processed the pain over time.
Izzard recounted stopping crying at age eleven as a coping mechanism while in boarding school, and later recognizing emotional numbness at nineteen. She described actively working to overcome this detachment, acknowledging the potential impact of boarding school on emotional development.
Desire for Parenthood
Izzard has previously expressed her openness to having children and her attraction to women. In a conversation with Gyles Brandreth on the ‘Rosebud’ podcast, she reiterated her happiness at the prospect of parenthood, stating, “I would be very happy to have children. But at the moment it’s not there. Never say never.”
She affirmed her identity as a transgender woman who is attracted to women, clarifying that she has never felt attraction towards men.
Navigating Relationships
While acknowledging the potential challenges of dating as a trans woman, Izzard expressed contentment with her own company and isn’t actively seeking a relationship. However, she remains open to finding a partner who is intelligent, possesses a good sense of humor, and is physically attractive.
Izzard emphasized the need for a confident and strong-minded partner to navigate the complexities of a relationship.
Past Relationships
Izzard’s past relationships include a long-term partnership with Sarah Townsend, whom she met at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 1989. Townsend also directed the documentary ‘Believe: The Eddie Izzard Story’ about Izzard’s life.
The pair were rumored to have been married for a period, though they separated in 2002 and remained friends. Izzard also previously dated Susie Church, who passed away in 2016.
This discussion about her personal life follows Izzard receiving an honorary doctorate from a university amidst ongoing debates surrounding transgender rights. She continues to be a prominent voice for transgender visibility and acceptance.
