Stephen Fry has initiated legal action against the CogX Festival, seeking up to £100,000 in damages following a fall from a stage during a keynote speech. The incident, which occurred on September 14, 2023, at the O2 Arena in London, resulted in severe injuries for the renowned broadcaster and author.

Incident Details

Fry was delivering a keynote speech on Artificial Intelligence when, after concluding his presentation, he fell approximately six feet onto the concrete floor. This fall caused fractures to his right leg, pelvis, and ribs. He subsequently required a walking stick for an extended period, impacting his mobility.

Legal Claims

Court documents allege that CogX Festival Ltd and Blonstein Events Ltd were negligent in ensuring stage safety. The claim states that inadequate lighting and a lack of proper fall protection contributed to Fry’s injuries. Fry’s legal representative, Keith Barrett of Fieldfisher, stated that court proceedings were necessary due to the defendants’ refusal to acknowledge Fry’s account.

Responses to the Lawsuit

A spokesperson for CogX expressed concern for Fry’s recovery but declined to comment further due to the ongoing legal process. Representatives for Blonstein Events Ltd denied responsibility, stating they hadn’t been served with court proceedings and were confident in their defense.

Fry’s Account

In a December 2023 interview with Claudia Winkleman on BBC Radio 2, Fry described being unaware of the six-foot drop as he stepped off the stage. He detailed breaking his leg in multiple places, fracturing his pelvis in four locations, and sustaining several rib fractures. He praised the care he received at Queen Elizabeth Woolwich Hospital.

Ongoing Investigation

Greenwich Council is considering an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fall. The case is currently before the court to determine liability for Fry’s injuries and associated losses. Fry has expressed continued concerns about navigating London pavements while recovering.
