London, UK – British actor Stephen Fry has filed a £100,000 personal injury claim against the CogX Festival following a fall during a keynote speech in September 2023.
Stage Fall and Injuries
The incident occurred on September 14, 2023, at the O2 Arena in London. Fry was delivering a speech on Artificial Intelligence when he fell approximately six feet from the stage onto the concrete floor.
The fall resulted in multiple fractures to his right leg, pelvis, and ribs. He initially required a walking stick and faced a prolonged recovery period.
Legal Action and Allegations
Fry is suing CogX Festival Ltd and Blonstein Events Ltd, alleging negligence in ensuring the safety of the stage and backstage areas. Court documents state the defendants failed to maintain a secure environment, leading to his injuries.
Conflicting Responses
CogX expressed concern but declined to comment due to the ongoing legal process. Fry’s legal representative, Keith Barrett of Fieldfisher, confirmed the necessity of court proceedings. Blonstein Events Ltd denies responsibility, stating they haven’t been served with court proceedings and are confident in their defense.
Fry’s Recovery and Praise for the NHS
In a December 2023 interview with Claudia Winkleman on BBC Radio 2, Fry detailed the extent of his injuries, including breaks to his leg, pelvis (in four places), and multiple ribs.
Despite the severity of the fall, Fry praised the care he received at Queen Elizabeth Woolwich Hospital, acknowledging the NHS could have prevented a worse outcome. He has since recovered enough to walk without assistance, though he admits to some lingering self-consciousness in crowds.
Safety Concerns Raised
The incident prompted Greenwich Council to consider an investigation into safety standards at large-scale events.
