Stephen Fry has filed a lawsuit against the CogX tech conference seeking £100,000 in damages following a fall from the stage during a keynote speech.

Incident at CogX Conference

The incident occurred in September 2023 at the O2 Arena in London while Fry, 68 at the time, was speaking on Artificial Intelligence. He fell approximately six feet onto the concrete floor as he attempted to leave the stage.

Injuries Sustained

As a result of the fall, Fry sustained multiple fractures, including to his right leg, pelvis, and several ribs. He required a walking stick for an extended period and experienced significant limitations to his mobility.

Legal Claims and Allegations

Court documents allege that CogX Festival Ltd and Blonstein Events Ltd were negligent in ensuring stage and backstage safety. The claim asserts that inadequate lighting and a lack of proper protection contributed to the accident.

Conflicting Accounts

Blonstein Events Ltd has denied responsibility, stating they were not involved in stage setup or safety protocols. CogX representatives have declined to comment on the ongoing legal process but expressed concern for Fry’s well-being.

Fry’s Account and Recovery

In a December 2023 interview with Claudia Winkleman on BBC Radio 2, Fry detailed the extent of his injuries and expressed gratitude for the care he received at Queen Elizabeth Woolwich Hospital.

He acknowledged the fall could have resulted in more severe injuries, such as spinal or skull trauma. Fry has demonstrated resilience throughout his recovery, gradually regaining mobility and returning to public engagements.

Investigation and Safety Concerns

Greenwich Council is considering an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fall. The case highlights the importance of stringent safety standards at public events to prevent accidents.
