Film director Baz Luhrmann and costume designer Catherine Martin made a memorable appearance at the 2026 Met Gala, held on Monday at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

A Style Inspired by the King

The acclaimed 63-year-old Luhrmann embraced a style reminiscent of Elvis Presley, sporting a grey hairstyle with a subtle mullet. He paired this with a sharply tailored black suit, accented by vibrant pastel blue cuffs.

Details of Luhrmann’s Look: He accessorized with sparkling diamond cuff links and a prominent blue stone ring, mirroring the tint of his glasses.

Catherine Martin’s Elegant Ensemble

Catherine Martin, a renowned costume designer at 61, chose a more understated yet elegant black gown. The dress featured pastel blue panels and delicate sparkling embellishments.

The couple appeared radiant as they posed for photographers, with Martin showcasing her signature bold blue-framed glasses.

The 'Costume Art' Exhibition

The annual Met Gala, officially the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Benefit, is a key event in the fashion world, taking place on the first Monday of May.

This year’s theme, ‘Costume Art,’ and dress code, ‘Fashion Is Art,’ challenged attendees to explore the intersection of fashion and artistic expression, focusing on how designers use the human form.

Co-Chairs and Sponsors

Beyonce, Nicole Kidman, and Venus Williams served as co-chairs, alongside Anna Wintour, Vogue’s global editorial director. This was Venus Williams’ debut as a co-chair.

The exhibition is supported by lead sponsors Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez, who also served as honorary co-chairs, and the French luxury fashion house Yves Saint Laurent.

Exhibition Details

The Costume Institute’s exhibition will present a dialogue between historical and contemporary garments, organized around the classical and nude body, the representation of ageing and pregnant bodies, and the anatomical body.

According to institute curator Andrew Bolton, fashion achieves its artistic status through its connection to the human body.

The ‘Costume Art’ exhibition will be open to the public from May 10th through January 10th of the following year, following the exclusive Met Gala event on May 4th. The gala is a vital fundraising source for the Costume Institute.
