The $30 million toe in the water

The Littlest Hobo, a classic children's adventure series, is getting a reboot almost 50 years after its initial airing. The new series will be produced by Lionsgate Canada and will feature the involvement of Hollywood heavyweights Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

A classic children's adventure series, The Littlest Hobo, is getting the reboot treatment almost 50 years after it first aired. The original Canadian series was based on Charles R. Rondeau's 1958 movie of the same name and aired from 1963 to 1965 on syndication, before being revived for a more successful second run on CTV from 1979 to 1985.

In total, The Littlest Hobo was a near-perfect '80s kids' show and ran eight seasons and 175 episodes across two runs, and was hugely popular, especially during its revival.

Why 4,000 unsold units became the prize

The show is now set for a reboot and will be produced by Lionsgate Canada, alongside Hollywood heavyweights Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg via their production company Point Grey Pictures. They will also work closely with Rose Oushalkas and Christopher Dew of New Hobo Productions Inc., and Crave.

The Littlest Hobo followed an ownerless, highly intelligent dog, which drifted from town to town, helping people and enriching communities along the way.

An echo of Sydney's 2024 institutional buy-up

It featured notable supporting appearances from several prominent Hollywood actors, including Henry Gibson and Keenan Wynn, and became a staple of Canadian television.

The involvemeent of Rogen and Goldberg should ensure that the series gets a strong and impressive production value, and might even be able to get some current Hollywood stars in guest roles.

Who is the unnamed buyer?

Point Grey has already produced successful projects, including Neighbors and The Interview, and the TV shows Preacher, The Boys, and Emmy-dominating The Studio.

The fact that both are Canadian suggests this is a passion project and bodes well for the show's direction and its long-term future.

What auditors flagged in the May filing

The live-action billing also adds an interesting angle and means it is in keeping with the essence and magic of the original series .

While a release date has not been set for the series, it is expected to be a part of Bell Media's 2026/27 TV slate, meaning the show should enter production soon.

A familiar pattern from the 2019 crash

Remaking a classic show is not without its risks, but Goldberg and Rogen are talented filmmakers and likely have a strong love for the original series.

Their involvement can only be positive when it comes to getting The Littlest Hobo made and attracting the right talent to help make it a success .
