Los Angeles radio is in mourning following the death of Gary Mack, a prominent DJ from the influential KHJ “Boss Jock” era. The station 97.1 FM has also announced its shift to an all-sports format.

A Legacy of ‘Boss Radio’

Gary Mack, born Gary McDowell, passed away on April 14th at the age of 90 after a brief illness. His death leaves Johnny Williams as the last surviving original Boss Jock. Mack’s career included stops in Chicago, Miami, and Fresno before his impactful role at KHJ (930 AM).

Recruitment and the Birth of a Sound

Mack recalled being recruited by Bill Drake, a former colleague from KYNO in Fresno, to help transform KHJ into a radio powerhouse. He described rigorous rehearsals and critiques led by Program Director Ron Jacobs and Drake, where the “Boss Radio” format was meticulously developed.

The team, including Robert W. Morgan, Roger Christian, The Real Don Steele, Dave Diamond, Sam Riddle, and Johnny Williams, collaborated to create a captivating sound for listeners. Mack’s tenure at KHJ concluded in 1967, after which he joined KLAC (570 AM) and eventually retired to Orlando, Florida, in 1997.

Family and Remembrance

Gary Mack is survived by his four daughters, two granddaughters, one grandson, and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Sue.

97.1 FM Transitions to Sports

In addition to Mack’s passing, 97.1 FM is undergoing a significant change, transitioning to an all-sports format and launching as “97.1 The Fan” on May 11th. This change ends the FM simulcast of KNX (1070 AM), which began in December 2021.

Driven by Revenue and Industry Trends

While the move may not dramatically increase ratings, industry experts believe the primary motivation is national, capitalizing on the growing sports betting market and associated advertising opportunities. The decision also sparks speculation about the future of Audacy’s all-news stations, including KNX and KCBS in San Francisco, with potential sale rumors circulating.

The shift reflects a broader industry trend prioritizing revenue streams over traditional ratings performance. The station may playfully acknowledge its previous branding as “KNX News-Radio 97.1,” recognizing KNX’s long history on the AM dial.

Looking Ahead

The all-sports format on 97.1 FM is met with some skepticism, given the historical challenges of such formats in Los Angeles. However, the potential for revenue generation through sports betting advertising appears to be the driving force. The first full ratings report after the format change, in July, will offer insight into its success, though the primary goal appears to be financial.

The legacy of Boss Radio and figures like Gary Mack will endure, even as the radio industry continues to evolve. The new station will provide comprehensive coverage of local professional and college teams, breaking news, and live sports discussions.
