'The Authority' Film Shelved by DC Studios
DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has clarified that the highly anticipated film adaptation of “The Authority” is currently on hold. The decision stems from challenges related to the script and its integration into the broader DC Universe (DCU).
Gunn Addresses Misconceptions
Gunn addressed the status of the project on the social media platform Threads, responding to a user who believed he was writing and directing the film. He described a previous comment suggesting his involvement as a “normal slip of the tongue,” emphasizing he never intended to take on those roles due to scheduling conflicts and existing commitments.
Script and DCU Integration Issues
The postponement isn’t solely due to time constraints. Gunn explained that the script, while promising, didn’t fully align with the overarching narrative and logistical considerations of the DCU. He stated the project wasn’t creatively where it needed to be and didn’t seamlessly integrate into the established storyline.
Future of the Project Remains Uncertain
While Gunn left the door open for a potential future revival, stating “Maybe some day. Not soon,” the immediate outlook for “The Authority’s” development is bleak. This follows earlier comments in September where Gunn discussed engaging with a “really good creator” about the project.
Initial Plans and Comic Book Origins
“The Authority” was initially positioned as a cornerstone of Gunn’s DCU, announced alongside projects like “The Brave and the Bold,” “Superman,” “Supergirl,” and “Swamp Thing” as part of the first chapter, “Gods and Monsters.” The original comic book series, created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch in 1999 under DC’s Wildstorm imprint, features a team of powerful and morally complex superheroes.
Existing DCU Connection
Despite the film’s postponement, elements of “The Authority” have already been integrated into the DCU. María Gabriela de Faría’s portrayal of Angela Spica/The Engineer in the upcoming “Superman” film was intended as a setup for her eventual role within the team.
This highlights the dynamic nature of the DCU’s development under Gunn’s leadership, where projects are reassessed to ensure a cohesive narrative. Recent news also includes updates on other films and streaming content.
