Elsie Kelly, best known for portraying Noreen Maltby in the popular ITV series Benidorm, has died at the age of 89. The actress passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday, concluding a remarkable 50-year career in show business.
A Decade as Noreen Maltby
Kelly’s decade-long portrayal of Noreen, the adoptive mother of Geoff Maltby (Johnny Vegas), resonated with audiences. Her character was often hilariously mistaken for Geoff’s assistant during their Spanish vacations.
Noreen was known for her endearing cluelessness and unwavering good intentions, quickly becoming a fan favorite throughout the show’s run, which concluded in 2018. She even played Noreen’s twin sister, Doreen, in the final series, demonstrating her versatility.
Early Career and Diverse Roles
Before Benidorm, Elsie Kelly gained recognition as Eileen Tardebigge, the gossipy cleaner in the long-running soap opera Crossroads. She held this role until the show’s cancellation in 1988.
Television Appearances
Kelly’s career included appearances in numerous other television programs, such as Bread, The Famous Five, The Ghost Hunter, and the children’s show Harry and the Wrinklies. Later roles included appearances in Skins, The Peter Serafinowicz Show, and Coronation Street.
Recognition and Tributes
Steve Pemberton, co-creator of Inside No. 9, fondly remembered Kelly from his time on Benidorm and cast her in the critically acclaimed episode ‘Nana’s Party,’ reuniting her with Siobhan Finneran.
“She was one of the most beloved cast members,” said Derren Litten, the creator of Benidorm, praising her natural acting abilities and comic timing. He explained that her audition for a different role led him to expand Noreen’s character.
Co-star Remembrances
Tributes have poured in from colleagues. Crissy Rock described her as “an absolute joy to work with,” and Carol Challis, widow of John Challis, remembered her as “the dearest and kindest lady.”
Beyond Acting
Elsie Kelly’s dedication extended beyond acting. She served as the director of the Birkenhead Operatic Society Trust in Merseyside for nearly five decades, retiring in 2019. Her legacy as a talented actress and generous individual will be remembered by all who knew her.
