A major $4 billion expansion of the Enbridge Westcoast pipeline system has been approved for British Columbia. This project will add 300 million cubic feet per day of natural gas capacity, designed to meet growing demand and facilitate Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) exports.

Boosting BC’s Energy Infrastructure

Federal Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson announced the expansion on April 24th. The project is intended to enhance the province’s energy security and support residential, commercial, healthcare, educational, and power generation needs.

Project Route and Timeline

Construction is scheduled to begin this summer. The pipeline expansion will run from Chetwynd in northeastern British Columbia, south along Highway 1 through the Cariboo region, continuing through Merritt, following the Coquihalla Highway, and ending in Sumas, near the US border.

Supporting LNG Exports and Economic Growth

A key driver for the expansion is the anticipated growth in LNG exports, particularly from facilities like the Woodfibre LNG project, which aims to be the world’s first net-zero LNG facility. The increased pipeline capacity will provide the necessary feedstock for these operations.

Economic Benefits

The government forecasts that the project will add over $3 billion to Canada’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). It is also expected to generate more than $700 million in tax revenue, which will be allocated to public services like roads, healthcare, and schools.

Commitment to Sustainability

The project’s design will prioritize environmental considerations, aligning with Canada’s commitment to sustainable energy development. Further details will be provided in a speech by Minister Hodgson in Toronto.

Long-Term Impact

The expansion is expected to create jobs during construction and operation. Successful implementation will require collaboration between Enbridge, the provincial government, Indigenous communities, and other stakeholders to ensure responsible development and minimize environmental impacts.
