The Corona-Norco Unified School District is considering potential adjustments to its seventh and eighth grade programs at Cesar Chavez Academy and Home Gardens Academy in Corona, California.

Program Review and Timeline

Currently, the district is evaluating options to ensure equitable access to academic opportunities for students in these programs, aligning them with those offered in other schools within the district. The district has stated that any changes would not be implemented until the 2027-2028 school year.

Parent Concerns and Feedback

Parents have voiced concerns about the possibility of grade-level elimination. Amanda Cromer, a parent with children at both schools, expressed “frustration and shock” upon receiving notification of a town hall meeting regarding a potential K-8 structure. She noted a lack of detailed information about the proposed changes.

Cromer emphasized the significance of the schools’ dual-language program, a major draw for many families. She also pointed out the inconvenience of the nearest alternative dual-language school, located approximately 5-6 miles away.

District Response and Enrollment Factors

The district declined a formal interview but confirmed that declining enrollment is a contributing factor in considering the elimination of seventh and eighth grades at the two academies. The district, one of the largest in California, stressed that it is in the early stages of exploration.

Upcoming Town Hall Meeting

Another town hall meeting is scheduled for Home Gardens Academy on May 7th at 5:30 p.m. to allow community members to ask questions and provide feedback. The district has committed to ongoing dialogue with stakeholders to address concerns and gather input.
