The firearm was found on the west side of Columbus after school staff observed students looking at it during recess. School administration immediately secured the area, ensuring no students handled the weapon and confirming everyone was safe.
Principal Tammie Gale addressed families in a letter, reaffirming the school’s dedication to student safety. “Safety is a top priority in all our endeavors here at Sullivant Elementary School,” Gale wrote. “I am writing to inform you about a concerning incident that impacted our day. Our students' well-being is always our top priority. I urge you to remind your student that if they see something, they should say something.”
Police Investigation
Law enforcement officials secured the firearm and are working to determine its source. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the 24-hour anonymous Safer Together hotline at 844-SAFER-OH.
Multiple Incidents in Columbus
This incident is one of several recent events impacting the city of Columbus. A Columbus police officer was shot in the Linden area on Wednesday evening, according to the Fraternal Order of Police.
Jaricah Wright, accused in a deadly wrong-way crash on a local interstate, had her bond set at $500,000 over two weeks after the incident. Former Ohio State President Ted Carter was also reportedly involved in attempting to secure a job for a woman at the university.
Additionally, a Columbus mother, Jasmine, is warning parents to monitor their children after her 12-year-old son was attacked by a group of teenagers. “Parents must know where their kids are and who they’re with,” she urged.
In a separate incident, a prisoner escaped custody during transport from the Licking County Municipal Building but was later recaptured by deputies.
