A large-scale police operation has taken place at Webb House in Crewe, Cheshire, following allegations of serious sexual offences, modern slavery, and forced marriage. The headquarters of the Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light (AROPL) is under investigation after a woman came forward with disturbing claims of abuse and exploitation.
Webb House: From Orphanage to Investigation
Webb House, a Grade II-listed building originally constructed in 1912 as an orphanage for children of railway workers, is now the focus of a major police inquiry. The property once housed up to 80 children, who wore traditional uniforms.
Allegations of Abuse and Exploitation
The investigation began after a woman alleged she was lured to the UK in 2023 under false pretences. She claims to have joined AROPL and was subsequently subjected to sexual and physical abuse, forced marriage, and financial control.
The alleged victim reported being contacted online and visited in her home country before agreeing to relocate. After selling her home and relinquishing control of her finances and travel documents, she claims she was taken to Sweden and alerted authorities during a return journey through Ireland.
AROPL and its Leader
The group, led by Abdullah Hashem, who identifies himself as a ‘saviour of mankind’, has operated from Webb House for the past five years. Hashem is a former documentary maker and comedian.
Recent footage shows a significant police presence at the site, with over 500 officers involved in the raids. The property now features CCTV, constant surveillance, and has been observed with drones and a ‘robodog’ patrolling the grounds.
Current Status of the Investigation
Ten individuals – seven men and three women – have been arrested and bailed in connection with the allegations. Cheshire Police have stated that the investigation is not directed at the religious group itself and poses no risk to the wider community.
The court heard the alleged victim was pressured into marriage with another member and persuaded to sell her possessions. The case is ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
