A large-scale police operation has taken place at Webb House in Crewe, Cheshire, following allegations of serious sexual offences, modern slavery, and forced marriage. The building, formerly an orphanage, currently serves as the headquarters of the Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light (AROPL).

Historical Landmark Under Scrutiny

Webb House, a Grade II-listed building constructed in 1912, originally functioned as an orphanage for children of railway workers. For over a century, it provided housing for up to 80 children. In recent years, the property has been occupied by AROPL, a group led by Abdullah Hashem, who identifies himself as a ‘saviour of mankind.’

Modern Amenities and Security

The site now includes modern amenities such as a trampoline, climbing frames, and an outdoor gym. However, it also features significant security measures, including CCTV, reported drone surveillance, and a robotic dog used for patrols.

Investigation Launched After Allegations

The investigation began after a woman who spent time with AROPL in 2023 came forward with allegations of serious sexual offences, modern slavery, and forced marriage. Over 500 police officers from multiple forces were involved in the operation.

Arrests and Bail

Ten individuals – seven men and three women – were arrested in connection with the allegations and have since been released on bail. Authorities have stated that the investigation is not directed at the religious group itself and does not pose a risk to the public.

Alleged Victim's Account

The alleged victim claims she was brought to the UK under false pretenses and subjected to sexual and physical abuse after joining AROPL. She alleges she was persuaded to sell her home and relinquish control of her finances and travel documents.

She reportedly raised the alarm while travelling back to the UK via Ireland after being taken to Sweden by the group. Court proceedings revealed she was initially contacted online and visited in her home country before being convinced to relocate to the UK in 2023.

Upon arrival at Webb House, she claims she was forced into marriage and subjected to rape and assault.

Ongoing Investigation and Uncertain Future

The case highlights a concerning shift in the building’s purpose, from a place of care for vulnerable children to a location at the center of serious criminal allegations. The investigation is ongoing, and the future of Webb House and AROPL remains uncertain. The situation underscores the complexities of religious freedom and the potential for exploitation within closed communities.
