A large-scale police operation took place at Webb House in Crewe, Cheshire, the headquarters of the Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light (AROPL), following allegations of serious sexual offences, modern slavery, and forced marriage. Ten people have been arrested in connection with the investigation.

Webb House: From Orphanage to Investigation Site

Webb House, a Grade II-listed building originally constructed in 1912 as an orphanage for children of railway workers, is now at the center of a major police investigation. The property, situated on five acres of land, once provided housing for up to 80 children.

The Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light

Today, Webb House serves as the headquarters for the Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light (AROPL). Led by Abdullah Hashem, a former documentary maker and comedian who refers to himself as a ‘saviour of mankind’, the group is viewed by some as a religious community and by others as a cult.

Allegations of Abuse and Slavery

The investigation began after a woman alleged she was lured to the UK under false pretences in 2023. She claims she joined AROPL and was subsequently subjected to serious sexual offences, modern slavery, and forced marriage.

The Alleged Victim's Story

The woman stated she was contacted online, visited by group members in her home country, and persuaded to sell her property and relocate to the UK. Upon arriving at Webb House, she alleges she was forced into marriage and endured rape and assault. She contacted authorities while travelling back to the UK via Ireland from Sweden.

Police Response and Arrests

Ten individuals – seven men and three women – have been arrested and subsequently bailed in connection with the allegations. Police have emphasized that the investigation is not directed at the religious group itself and poses no risk to the wider community.

Security Measures and Current Status

The site now features enhanced security measures, including CCTV, constant surveillance, and drones, as well as a ‘robodog’ patrolling the grounds. Approximately 150 adults and children occupied the site prior to the police operation, and some were observed protesting during the raids.

Ongoing Investigation and Concerns

The investigation is ongoing, and the future of Webb House and AROPL remains uncertain. The case has sparked a wider conversation about the regulation of religious groups and the protection of vulnerable individuals from exploitation and abuse. The alleged victim relinquished control of her finances and travel documents after joining the group.
