Daniel Couch, a man previously linked to a machete attack on a King County Metro bus, has escaped from electronic home detention. Authorities issued an arrest warrant after his GPS tracking device stopped reporting his location near a residence in south Seattle this past Saturday.
The July machete attack in the Chinatown International District
The threat posed by Daniel Couch is not a new development for King County residents. According to the report, Couch previously attempted to board a King County Metro bus near the intersection of 4th Avenue S and Jackson Street in the Chinatown International District (CID) this past July. during that encounter, a bus driver—who had recognized Couch from a prior incident—refused to let him on board due to fears that the man was armed with a machete.
This incident established the baseline for the current manhunt.. The driver's alertness prevented a potentially lethal confrontation on public transit, but the subsequent decision to allow Couch to remain in the community under electronic supervision has now created a new crisis for local law enforcement.
The GPS failure at Sea Mar Turning Point Treatment Center
The current search for Couch began after his escape from Electronic Home Detention (EHD) this past Saturday. EHD is a pretrial alternative to jail that allows defendants to serve time at home while wearing electronic tracking devices, such as GPS ankle bracelets... As the report states, Couch had been sent back to the King County Jail after violating policies at the Sea Mar Turning Point Treatment Center, but the King County Prosecutor's Office attempted to return him to the treatment facility in September.
To mitigate the risks associated with his return to the facility, authorities required Couch to wear a GPS monitoring device. However, the technology failed to provide the necessary oversight. Approximately two hours after leaving the Sea Mar Turning Point Treatment Center, Couch’s GPS signal stopped transmitting his location, a move prosecutors are characterizing as a "walkaway."
The unanswered question of the south Seattle residence
While the King County Prosecutor's Office has issued an arrest warrant, several critical details remain unverified.. The last known location of Daniel Couch was a home in south Seattle, where his GPS signal was last recorded. despite the ankle monitor issuing verbal demands for him to contact officers, Couch ignored the device and has not been seen since.
Law enforcement has yet to clarify if the residence in south Seattle was a pre-arranged safe house or if Couch was seeking refuge with acquaintances. Furthermore, it remains unclear whether the failure of the GPS device was a technical malfunction or a deliberate attempt by Couch to tamper with the hardware. Until the identity of those at the last known location is established, the community remains at risk.
A surge of violence across the Puget Sound
The escape of a machete-wielding fugitive occurs amidst a backdrop of escalating crime in the Seattle area. On Tuesday, a gas station clerk was found dead following an early-morning shooting at a 76 gas station in Belltown. This follows a Friday night drive-by shooting near Meridian and 136th Street that resulted in a crash involving a Pierce County sheriff's patrol car.
These incidents, combined with a domestic violence standoff in Grays Harbor that lasted through Monday, suggest a period of heightened volatility for regional law enforcement. As the search for Couch intensifies, the intersection of these various violent events underscores the growing pressure on public safety resources throughout the Puget Sound.
