The search for the remains of two-year-old Genesis Reid is scheduled to begin this week at the Coffee County Landfill in Enterprise, Alabama. This comes after the arrest of her mother, Adrienne Reid, who is facing charges of capital murder and abuse of a corpse.
Initial Disappearance and Investigation
The case began when Adrienne Reid reported her daughter missing from their apartment on Apache Drive, claiming Genesis had vanished while wearing Minnie Mouse pajamas. Authorities quickly became suspicious, leading to Adrienne Reid’s arrest on a felony charge of filing a false report the day after the initial report.
Key Evidence and Timeline
Enterprise Police Chief Michael Moore stated that evidence indicates Genesis Reid was last seen on Christmas Day. Investigators believe Adrienne Reid is responsible for her daughter’s death, allegedly placing the child’s body in a duffel bag and discarding it in a dumpster.
Surveillance footage supports this timeline, showing Adrienne Reid carrying a duffel bag towards the apartment complex dumpster. She was also captured on video returning to the dumpster area two days later with toys and belongings believed to be Genesis’s.
Landfill Search Details
The search operation will be a collaborative effort between the Enterprise Police Department and the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office, led by Sheriff Scott Byrd. Authorities have identified a search area of approximately 200 feet by 100 feet, extending 8 to 10 feet deep within the landfill.
Sheriff Byrd cautioned that the search will be complex and could take up to ten weeks or longer due to the multiple stages of waste compaction. Waste was compacted in the garbage truck, at a distribution facility, and finally at the landfill itself.
Search Team and Scope
A team of 60 individuals will participate in the search. Chief Moore noted the search area has been significantly reduced from an initial size equivalent to thousands of football fields to a more manageable two-acre zone.
Moore acknowledged the physical, emotional, and mental toll the search will take on those involved, emphasizing the sensitivity surrounding cases involving children. The primary goal is to achieve justice for Genesis Reid and ensure she is not forgotten.
Ongoing Commitment to Justice
The search is being guided by garbage truck schedules and GPS data from landfill equipment. This meticulous approach demonstrates the commitment to finding Genesis and providing closure to the community. In a separate case, a man in Montgomery County was sentenced to 20 years in prison for two rape convictions.
