Brandon Byrne, 23, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 23 years for the murder of James Cook, 40. The sentencing follows a violent altercation that began at the Loose Cannon pub in Newark, Nottinghamshire.
The Fatal Attack
The incident occurred on April 30th of last year. CCTV footage captured Byrne chasing and fatally stabbing Mr. Cook after an argument. The footage showed Byrne methodically pursuing Mr. Cook down Stodman Street.
Escalation of Violence
A physical fight initially broke out inside the pub after “something was said,” resulting in Byrne sustaining a facial injury. Following their ejection from the premises, Byrne pursued Mr. Cook, ultimately launching a deadly attack with a knife. He continued to assault Mr. Cook even after he fell to the ground.
Court Proceedings and Sentencing
Byrne was apprehended by police at 4:09 am the following morning. He initially claimed self-defense but admitted to possessing an offensive weapon. However, evidence presented at Nottingham Crown Court demonstrated a premeditated act of violence motivated by retribution.
Judge Steven Coupland stated the murder was driven by “anger and revenge” and confirmed an intention to kill. The judge emphasized the severity of Byrne’s actions and the deliberate nature of the attack.
Impact on the Cook Family
The murder has had a devastating impact on the Cook family. James Cook was described as a loving father, husband, and friend, and a “hero” to his three daughters.

One daughter described Byrne as “the monster who stole my dad like he was nothing.” Another daughter expressed a pain “that cuts through you like a knife.” Mr. Cook’s parents, residing in Australia, also shared their immense sorrow.
