The August 6th 911 call and the discovery at Calling Lake
On August 6, an unknown male caller contacted emergency services near Calling Lake, Alberta, reporting that he had been kidnapped and was injured. This call, placed shortly before 3:30 a.m., triggered an immediate response from the RCMP. According to the report, the boy had left his Edmonton home on August 5 of his own volition.
Officers arriving at the scene discovered a stolen vehicle from Edmonton that showed clear signs of an attack. By 9:00 a.m. that same morning, authorities located the remains of a young boy approximately 190 kilometres north of Edmonton. An autopsy performed the following day identified the victim as Fiasal Hussein and officially deemed his death a homicide.

Following search warrants executed at Edmonton residences on October 24, the RCMP arrested three individuals in connection with the death. Cole Morin, 34, and Curtis Brown, 36, have both been charged with kidnapping and first-degree murder.
A third individual, 36-year-old Rachel Stuart, faces a charge of second-degree murder. all three suspects have been remanded into custody and are scheduled to appear in court on November 9.
The connection between the Edmonton suspects and Fiasal Hussein
The investigation has revealed that the suspects and the victim, 12-year-old Fiasal Hussein, were known to one another. Sgt. James McConnell of the RCMP major crimes unit confirmed that the group was involved in criminal activity, though specific details are protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The Hussein family has reportedly been cooperative throughout the process.
The social connections between the accused are also highly specific. As the RCMP reported, Curtis Brown and Rachel Stuart were in a common-law relationship, while Stuart and Cole Morin shhared familial ties. The suspects were also known to Edmonton police, who assisted the RCMP in the investigation.
The missing motive behind the Calling Lake abduction
Despite the arrests, the specific reason for the kidnapping remains a central unknown in the case. Sgt. James McConnell noted that it is currently unclear why the suspects would take a 12-year-old boy under false pretences to a rural area to commit murder. McConnell emphasized that the killing was unjustified and could not be supported by any circumstances.
Several specific questions remain unanswered as the case moves toward trial. While the RCMP believes the initial 911 call was made by Hussein, investigators have been unable to confirm his identity due to sptoty cellular service in the Calling Lake area. Furthermore, police are not currently providing details regarding the specific cause of death, as the matter is presently before the courts.
