A Chicago man, Deandre Bell, has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Davonta Curtis, a transgender woman and Bell's girlfriend. Curtis was reportedly killed with a hammer.

Bell Charged in Curtis Homicide

Deandre Bell, 24, is accused of first-degree murder in the death of 31-year-old Davonta Curtis. The incident occurred on Easter, with prosecutors stating Bell and Curtis were together at Curtis' apartment. It is alleged that Bell assaulted Curtis, striking him in the head with a hammer.

Surveillance footage reportedly shows Bell leaving the apartment building around 1:00 a.m. the following day. Curtis' sister discovered her sibling's body on April 8 after becoming concerned about a lack of contact. The victim's car and keys were missing from the scene.

Authorities located the vehicle with Bell inside on West Lake Street. Investigators reported that Bell confessed to striking Curtis with a hammer and stealing his belongings. A blood-stained hammer was found in Bell's backpack.

Bell's phone allegedly contained disturbing search queries prior to Curtis' death, including "how to kill someone with a hammer?" and "if a person gets hit in the head with a hammer while sleeping what happens." The motive for the alleged attack remains undetermined.

Separate Case: Graves Accused of Mother's Murder

In a separate case, another Chicago man, Daniest Graves, is charged with first-degree murder and concealment of a death. He is accused of killing his 88-year-old mother, whose body was found on April 7 within their shared home.

Court documents indicate Graves' body was discovered in the basement, concealed behind a bookcase. The body was found rolled in a rug, wrapped in garbage bags, and secured with duct tape. Blankets, clothing, and mail were also found with the body.

An autopsy revealed the victim suffered 17 blunt force injuries, including a severe head wound exposing her skull. She also sustained defensive wounds on her forearm and thumb, according to the prosecution.

Broader Implications of Violence

These separate cases highlight the prevalence of interpersonal violence and underscore the importance of addressing crimes against vulnerable populations, including transgender individuals and the elderly. The investigations and subsequent legal proceedings aim to ensure accountability and pursue justice for the victims.

The incidents prompt discussions on the need for increased support systems for victims of violence and the imperative of fostering safer communities for all members.
