Cartel Leader Apprehended in London
Luis Grijalba, a Costa Rican cartel leader known as 'Shock,' was arrested in London after his wife’s social media activity inadvertently exposed their location. The US is seeking his extradition on charges related to cocaine trafficking and involvement in a large-scale transnational drug operation.
Social Media Reveals Travel Plans
The 44-year-old Grijalba was on a £16,000 New Year’s holiday with his wife, Estefania McDonald Rodriguez, when US federal agents began monitoring her Instagram and Facebook profiles. These profiles provided crucial intelligence to the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA).
European Tour Tracked Online
Ms. Rodriguez documented the couple’s European tour, including stops in Rome and Paris, posting photos of landmarks like the Trevi Fountain and the Eiffel Tower. Captions, such as ‘A trip is lived three times: when we dream it, when we live it, when we remember it,’ allowed the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to track their movements from Costa Rica.
Arrest and Extradition Hearing
Grijalba was arrested near London Bridge on December 29, 2024, while staying in a luxury hotel. An extradition hearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court revealed he is wanted in the US on two charges related to trafficking over 11 pounds of cocaine, each carrying a potential sentence of 10 years to life.
Allegations of Extensive Drug Operation
US authorities allege Grijalba was a key figure in a transnational drug trafficking organization operating between South America and the US, with connections to Colombian, Mexican, and Panamanian cartels. The cartel reportedly used speedboats, submersibles, and aircraft to transport cocaine.
Details from Court Documents
District Judge John McGarva summarized an affidavit stating Grijalba had been involved in large-scale cocaine trafficking since 2013, storing and distributing shipments. The indictment also accuses him of orchestrating acts of torture, violence, and murder.
Ongoing Legal Proceedings
Grijalba, currently detained at Wormwood Scrubs prison, refused to attend his extradition hearing, which proceeded in his absence. The US intends to present evidence from cooperating witnesses and intercepted communications detailing drug trafficking activities in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Honduras, involving up to eight tonnes of cocaine.
Ms. Rodriguez, believed to reside in Costa Rica’s Limon province, is where Grijalba allegedly operated his drug trafficking empire. A US arrest warrant was issued on April 11, 2024, following an indictment on April 10, 2024.
