A major drug trafficker was apprehended in London thanks to his wife’s frequent social media updates. Luis Grijalba, 44, is accused of leading a large-scale cocaine trafficking network with international connections.
Kingpin Exposed Through Social Media
The arrest of Luis Grijalba, also known as ‘Shock’, was a direct result of his wife, Estefania McDonald Rodriguez, unknowingly revealing his location through detailed posts on Instagram and Facebook. The couple was on a European vacation when Ms. Rodriguez’s posts caught the attention of US federal agents.
Tracking the Kingpin’s Movements
The US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) monitored Ms. Rodriguez’s social media activity as the couple traveled from Costa Rica to Paris, Rome, and finally London. Her posts, featuring landmarks like the Trevi Fountain and the Eiffel Tower, provided crucial evidence.
Arrest and Extradition Proceedings
Acting on the information, the National Crime Agency (NCA) arrested Grijalba near London Bridge on December 29, 2024, while he was staying in a luxury hotel with his wife. He is wanted in the US on two counts related to trafficking over 11 pounds of cocaine, each carrying a potential sentence of ten years to life imprisonment.
Details of the Drug Operation
According to the indictment issued on April 10, 2024, Grijalba allegedly led a sophisticated drug trafficking network. This network utilized speed boats, submersibles, fishing vessels, and aircraft to smuggle an estimated seven to eight tonnes of cocaine through Central American countries like Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico.
The charges also include allegations of torture, violence, and murder. Judge John McGarva, summarizing an affidavit by US attorney Christopher Rapp, highlighted Grijalba’s central role in overseeing the storage and distribution of cocaine shipments from Colombian and Panamanian traffickers.
Extradition Decision Pending
Grijalba, currently detained at Wormwood Scrubs prison, refused to attend his extradition hearing. Judge McGarva recommended his extradition to the US, with the final decision resting with Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood. The prosecution plans to present evidence from four cooperating witnesses and intercepted communications.
Ms. Rodriguez, 33, was seemingly unaware of the implications of her online activity, regularly sharing photos of their travels. Her posts inadvertently provided a detailed trail for law enforcement, ultimately leading to her husband’s arrest and the disruption of a significant international drug trafficking operation.
