OTTAWA – A two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran has been agreed upon, according to a CBC News broadcast. The agreement, brokered by Pakistan, aims to allow time for negotiations, though its success remains uncertain.
Skilled Trades Shortage & Housing Solutions
The CBC News broadcast focused on Canada’s urgent need for homes and the concurrent shortage of skilled trades workers. The federal government has pledged funding for four million new homes by 2031, but faces a shortfall of approximately 250,000 construction workers expected to retire in the coming years.
The program highlighted several potential solutions. One approach involves attracting individuals from non-traditional backgrounds into the trades through programs like Blue Door’s ‘Construct’ initiative. This program provides free, eight-week training to individuals facing hardship, with participants receiving minimum wage during the course. According to the broadcast, nearly three-quarters of Construct graduates find employment in the skilled trades.
Another solution explored was the integration of technology and robotics into construction. Stephen Bates, a professor of architecture at Laurentian University, stated that adopting technology is crucial to reducing labour costs and increasing efficiency. Students are developing robots, such as ‘Warthog’, designed to assist with heavy lifting and repetitive tasks on construction sites. It was claimed that these robots could perform the work of two to three human workers.
Additionally, the broadcast featured the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program, which aims to encourage young people to consider careers in the trades. Katerina Mayeta of the Toronto Catholic District School Board noted a shift in attitudes, with more students, including young women, exploring apprenticeship opportunities. Angela Norman, a trainer with the program, emphasized the need to overcome existing biases within the industry, noting that women currently comprise only 5% of the skilled trades workforce.
The CBC News report also highlighted innovative approaches like prefabricated construction, particularly suited for regions with short construction seasons.
