Roshel and Algoma Steel Announce Strategic Partnership
Brampton-based armored vehicle manufacturer Roshel Inc. has partnered with Algoma Steel to establish Roshel Algoma Defence Solutions Inc. (RADS). This new venture will focus on the domestic production of ballistic steel, directly supporting Canadian defense requirements and creating potential for international exports.
Strengthening Canada’s Defense Capabilities
The collaboration aims to strengthen Canada’s industrial base, generate employment opportunities, and enhance national security. RADS will leverage Algoma Steel’s production capabilities and Roshel’s expertise in armored vehicle design to deliver a Canadian-made solution for ballistic steel.
A 'Buy Canadian' Strategy
Rajat Marwah, CEO of Algoma Steel, emphasized the partnership’s importance for Canada’s defense sector, stating it directly utilizes their production capabilities, workforce, and facilities for national security. The initiative prioritizes a ‘Buy Canadian’ strategy, aiming to create and sustain hundreds of jobs within the country.
Expanding Applications Beyond Defense
Roshel Algoma Defence will enable the sovereign production of ballistic steel solutions for a wide range of applications. These include light utility vehicles (LUVs), the Domestic Arctic Mobility Enhancement (DAME) program, ships, submarines, and broader Canadian defense needs.
Beyond defense, the partnership intends to support the use of ballistic steel in infrastructure, marine, aerospace, and security platforms, opening export opportunities to allied nations.
Centre of Excellence for Ballistic Steel Production
The two companies plan to establish a Canadian Centre of Excellence for Ballistic Steel Production. This centre will focus on key processes such as metal fabrication, forming, welding, and machining, all conducted within Canada.
Economic Impact and Workforce Development
RADS is projected to support over 500 workers, providing high-quality manufacturing jobs and strengthening Canada’s skilled industrial workforce. This will also support broader domestic supply chains, including those related to automotive manufacturing.
Roshel’s Commitment and Past Scrutiny
Roshel Inc. designs, produces, and supports platforms for government, security, and commercial use, supplying to Canada, allied nations, and NATO partners. The company emphasizes operational excellence, responsible business practices, and community engagement.
However, Roshel has faced criticism regarding a previous contract with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Former Member of Parliament Charlie Angus previously raised concerns about the legality of exporting military parts with potential for misuse against civilians, highlighting the ethical considerations within the defense industry.
