A long-serving Asda employee, Gavin Ramsay, 49, was dismissed from his position after confronting shoplifters at the South Shields supermarket.
Confrontation and Dismissal
Mr. Ramsay, a porter with 25 years of loyal service, intervened when he witnessed a group of young people leaving the store with stolen bottles of alcohol. He instinctively attempted to retrieve a bottle from one of the youths, resulting in a physical altercation and the shoplifter falling to the floor.
Despite successfully recovering the stolen item, Mr. Ramsay was subsequently sacked for gross misconduct, violating the retailer’s policy against physically challenging shoplifters. This case echoes a similar recent incident involving Sean Egan, a Morrisons manager who was also dismissed for confronting a shoplifter stealing expensive liquor.
Employee's Perspective
Mr. Egan, with 29 years of service, also experienced significant disruption due to the company’s decision. Mr. Ramsay described his reaction as a natural response to witnessing blatant theft and years of enduring abuse from shoplifters.
He maintains he wasn’t intending to cause harm, simply to prevent the theft. Video footage shows the youths further harassing Mr. Ramsay, pushing him onto a moving walkway following the initial confrontation.
Years of Service Disregarded
Mr. Ramsay expressed frustration that his decades of dedicated service were disregarded during an eight-hour disciplinary hearing. Now unemployed for the first time in his life, he is struggling financially, relying on benefits of just £90 per week.
He has been diagnosed with depression and anxiety as a result of the ordeal. He feels betrayed by Asda, stating he was ‘discarded like a piece of rubbish’ despite his unwavering commitment. He questions why the company chose termination over a warning, given his long service record.
Growing Concerns
Mr. Ramsay also reflects on a broader trend of declining respect for supermarket workers and a rise in antisocial behavior, highlighting a growing shoplifting epidemic in the UK. He previously suffered an assault at the same store’s petrol station, sustaining injuries, but this was not considered during his disciplinary process.
He believes the company failed to acknowledge the risks he routinely faced in his role.
