Britain's Local Garages Under Pressure

Independent car garages across the United Kingdom are facing a significant crisis, with many at risk of closure due to a combination of challenging factors. An investigation by Auto Express reveals a ‘perfect storm’ of issues impacting the industry’s viability.

Rising Costs and Financial Strain

Nine out of ten garages surveyed reported that escalating operating costs are their primary concern. These costs are driven by increases in wages, energy bills, and business rates. This follows earlier warnings from the Daily Mail and This is Money regarding potential increases in repair costs due to mechanic shortages and inflated parts prices.

The Electric Vehicle Transition

The rapid adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) presents a major hurdle for smaller garages. They struggle to afford the necessary investment in training and specialized equipment required to safely service these vehicles. The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) reports that currently, only one in four UK mechanics are accredited to work on EVs.

Skills Shortage Forecasts

Forecasts predict a widening gap between the demand for and supply of EV technicians. A potential shortfall of over 44,000 EV-qualified technicians is anticipated by 2035. While the number of accredited technicians is expected to rise to 137,000 by 2032 and 193,000 by 2035, demand is projected to outpace certification rates, especially in the early 2030s.

Workforce Challenges and Recruitment Difficulties

The automotive sector currently has 19,000 vacancies. A significant portion of the existing workforce is nearing retirement age – 47% are over 45, with 144,000 expected to retire by 2032. This demographic shift exacerbates the existing skills shortage.

Attracting Younger Mechanics

A ClickMechanic survey found that 70% of garages find it difficult to recruit mechanics under 25, and over a third consider attracting younger staff ‘very difficult’. This is attributed to perceptions of low pay, long hours, and physically demanding work, as well as a lack of apprenticeships and the high cost of tools and training.

Changing Consumer Preferences

The rise of on-demand repair services, similar to subscription models like Netflix, is also impacting traditional garages. Gen Z consumers increasingly prioritize convenience and digital solutions when it comes to car maintenance.
