The Fern Street Circus returned to the City Heights neighborhood this weekend, providing free entertainment to families. This vibrant event occurred amidst concerns about potential cuts to arts funding in San Diego.

Budget Deficit Threatens Arts Programs

San Diego is currently facing a $118 million budget deficit. Mayor Todd Gloria’s proposed budget includes a substantial $12 million reduction in arts grants – an 85% cut. This reduction poses a significant threat to the sustainability of cultural initiatives like the Fern Street Circus, which relies on funding from the city’s cultural affairs budget.

Mayor Gloria Addresses the Cuts

Mayor Gloria acknowledged the difficulty of the decision, stating, “Going forward, we can continue to work with our partners in the arts and culture community to make this hopefully a temporary situation, but right now this is what the situation demands.”

A Community Staple

Despite the financial challenges, the circus delivered a captivating performance on Saturday. The show featured jugglers, clowns, acrobats, and stilt performers, entertaining audiences of all ages.

Importance to the Community

Program Director Marcela Mercado emphasized the circus’s long-standing presence in the community. “The circus has been in the community for more than 30 years and we create different acts during the year. So these kids and artists have been rehearsing for more than a year to get the show going,” Mercado said.

Families Enjoy a Free Outing

Parents and attendees alike expressed the joy the circus brings to children. Karice Espinoza shared, “The circus brings a different type of joy out of children.” Her son, Marcelo, was particularly excited by the stilt walkers.

Lois Schenker appreciated the opportunity for a free family outing. “We’re just looking for something to do. Her mom had to work, so I thought I’d take her out and do something fun for the day, and this is something that’s free and we don’t find that too much more in San Diego,” Schenker said.
