Artemis II Breaks Distance Record
The Artemis II mission, currently on its sixth flight day, has surpassed the distance record set by Apollo 13 for the farthest humans have traveled from Earth. As of 12:57 p.m. Central Time (1:57 p.m. Eastern Time) today, the Orion spacecraft was 251,130 miles from Earth and 7,373 miles from the Moon. NASA anticipates reaching a maximum distance of approximately 252,760 miles, exceeding Apollo 13’s record by over 4,100 miles.
Lunar Flyby Observations Underway
Astronauts Victor Glover and Christina Koch are currently conducting detailed observations of the lunar surface, utilizing Nikon cameras and portable computing devices (PCDs) to record data and annotations. Earlier in the day, Commander Reid Wiseman and mission specialist Jeremy Hansen also contributed observations. The crew is focusing on the Oriental Basin, often referred to as the “Grand Canyon of the Moon,” aiming to capture detailed images and descriptions of its features.
Unexpected Color Discoveries
During the flyby, the crew has reported observing unexpected color variations on the Moon, specifically noting “brownish hue” areas. Jeremy Hansen described these hues as potentially caused by material from impacts landing on the lunar highlands, contrasting with the lighter albedo of ray areas. The science team had heard rumors of these colors, and Hansen’s observations are considered significant. The team is also studying the annular ring of the Oriental Basin, focusing on albedo, texture, and topography.
Future Observations and Earth Set
The crew will soon have a period of “crew choice” observation, allowing them to focus on features that particularly interest them. The spacecraft is expected to pass behind the Moon at approximately 5:41 p.m. Central Time (6:41 p.m. Eastern Time), resulting in a temporary loss of signal. Earth rise is anticipated at 6:21 p.m. Central Time, with communication being re-established shortly after. This mission is a crucial proving ground for lunar science operations, testing procedures for future Artemis missions.
