Artemis II Mission Concludes with Successful Earth Return
The crew of Artemis II has returned to Earth after a historic 10-day lunar mission, including an unprecedented flyby of the far side of the moon. The spacecraft splashed down, with post-landing commands being sent, marking the completion of a mission vital for preparations towards a planned moon landing in 2028.
The mission is also bringing back crucial data on the biological impacts of deep space travel. According to the broadcast, researchers are particularly interested in understanding “the fluid shifting and the brain tears” experienced by astronauts in space. Four astronauts traveled farther than any human before during the mission.
The broadcast highlighted key moments from the mission, beginning with launch. A voice identified as Jeremy stated, “Canada, I am thinking of you and I am hoping that all of you see your greatness reflected in this journey. I’m hoping that all of you see your greatness reflected in this journey.” Another voice declared, “This is Jeremy. We are going for all humanity. Good luck. God speed, Artemis II. Let’s go.”
The launch sequence was announced with a countdown: “Three, two, one. Booster ignition and lift off.” The crew of Artemis II was then described as being “bound for the moon” from inside the Orion capsule, nicknamed “Integrity.” Initial reports from within the capsule indicated all systems were nominal, with the crew stating, “That does go thank you. Thank you.”
As the spacecraft reached Earth’s orbit, the crew described their view, stating they were more than 100,000 miles from Earth and could see the entire globe from pole to pole. They noted visibility of Africa, Europe, and potentially the northern lights. One crew member expressed their enjoyment of the view, saying, “I really like it up here. I wish I could have gotten here sooner.”
Artemis II entered the moon’s gravitational sphere of influence as it prepared for its most ambitious feat: traveling around the far side of the moon on Monday. As the spacecraft prepared to go out of radio communication, a crew member stated, “As we prepare to go out of radio communication, we’re still going to feel your love from Earth. We love you from the moon.”
Job Market Update: Summer Job Postings Down 11%
In a separate segment, CBC News reported on the current job market. Ina Sidhu, CBC News, reported from Calgary that a western wear store is preparing for its busiest season and has already seen an increase in applicants, noting “There's a lot of eager kids out there that are wanting to get to work.”
However, Sidhu also stated that the job market isn’t expected to improve just yet. Employment site Indeed reports that the number of summer job postings are down 11% so far compared to this time last year.
