Atsushi Nakamura is back with a new manga series, launching in the popular Weekly Shonen Jump. This marks the mangaka’s third attempt at a full serialization, a horror-comedy centered around a skeptical science student and a series of urban legends.
New Series Launch in Weekly Shonen Jump
April has been a busy month for manga fans, with Weekly Shonen Jump debuting three new series. Nakamura’s return is particularly noteworthy, attracting both longtime followers and new readers.
A Critical Moment for Nakamura
Following previous works that didn’t achieve widespread success, Nakamura hopes this latest project will be his definitive breakthrough. He debuted in 2013 with a series that was cut short, and Agravity Boys (2019) ran for 59 chapters but remained relatively unknown.
A 'Rookie' Mindset
Nakamura shared a message via Viz Media, stating he’s approaching this serialization with a “rookie mindset.” He emphasized prioritizing character appeal, aiming for readers to connect with the protagonist’s journey.
The Premise: Cursed by Urban Legends
The story follows Seiroku Akari, a cynical high school student and science club member. Akari is a dedicated skeptic who attempts to debunk local urban legends.
Investigating the Kokubunji Curses
Akari investigates The Moonlit Tales of Kokubunji, a series of five stories about powerful curses. He attempts a ritual to break the seals on these spirits, but inadvertently triggers the curse himself.
Now haunted by the spirits, Akari must cohabitate with the entities he tried to disprove. The first three chapters are currently available on the Manga Plus app.
