New Orleans, LA – Zion Williamson has openly addressed the speculation surrounding his future with the New Orleans Pelicans. With two years remaining on his current contract after this season, the former No. 1 overall pick is aware of trade discussions involving his name.
Trade Chatter and Realism
While Pelicans executives Joe Dumars and Troy Weaver haven’t publicly indicated plans to trade Williamson, the power forward recognizes the ongoing conversations. He expressed a realistic understanding of the NBA’s business nature, acknowledging a trade is possible.
“New Orleans is home for me. It’s where I want to be,” Williamson told a reporter this week. “But at the end of the day, if we’re going to be realistic about it, the NBA is a business. I could be traded in the offseason, or I could be traded before trade deadline. Not that I want that to happen. But that’s just the realism of it.”
Addressing Health Concerns
Williamson has played in 59 games this season, a notable achievement considering his history of injuries. Throughout his six-year career, he has been limited to 30 or fewer games in three seasons.
Improved Recovery and Performance
Despite past injury struggles, Williamson believes his recent performance demonstrates his durability. He cited a quicker-than-expected recovery from a December hip strain as evidence of improvement, crediting his new trainer for the progress.
“I feel like I’ve shown enough this year to be able to say, like, ‘This is what it’s gonna look like,’” Williamson stated. “Even when I did have an injury, I was projected to miss four to six weeks, and instead I was back in two and then went on a long stretch of consecutive games.”
Contract Details and Timing
Williamson is currently in the third year of a five-year, $197.2 million contract. His current salary is $39.4 million, with scheduled increases to $42.2 million and $44.9 million in the following seasons, contingent on incentive marks.
- Contract guarantees increase based on games played the prior season.
- Playing at least 41 games guarantees the contract.
- Increases of 20% occur for every 10 additional games played (51, 61, etc.).
The Pelicans would ideally seek a trade before July 15, when Williamson’s contract becomes fully guaranteed.
