Zahn McClarnon is now a leading name in television, currently holding the number one position on the call sheet for the acclaimed series Dark Winds. While hesitant to label himself a “leading man,” McClarnon possesses the qualities of one, demonstrating poise and relatability in previous roles on Reservation Dogs, Fargo, and Longmire.
Dual Roles Sparked Recognition
The realization of McClarnon’s talent truly hit for one observer when he simultaneously portrayed tribal police officers in AMC’s Dark Winds and FX’s Reservation Dogs. He had been seen before, but it wasn’t until then that the actor’s skill truly stood out, embodying distinct characters – an Indigenous Gary Cooper in the former, and a Native Don Knotts in the latter.
Ascension to Leading Roles
At 59, McClarnon has progressed from guest appearances to recurring roles, and finally, with Dark Winds, which premiered in 2022, to the top of the call sheet. As police Lt. Joe Leaphorn in Dark Winds, he embodies the quiet strength of a classic screen lawman.
A Complex Performer
Known for his soft-spoken demeanor and private nature, McClarnon brings a unique sweetness and dignity to his characters, even those with darker complexities, like Hanzee Dent in Fargo. “Seventeen, Robert, he took out 17 people,” McClarnon recalled with a hint of pride during a recent Zoom interview, while in Santa Fe, New Mexico, for pre-production on the fifth season of Dark Winds, where he is also producing and directing.
Early Life and Identity
Born to a Hunkpapa Lakota mother from the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota and an Irish-American father from Denver, Colorado, McClarnon experienced a nomadic childhood, largely spent in Browning, Montana, near the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. He described the challenges of growing up with mixed ethnicity in the 1970s, constantly questioned about his identity: “Where are you from?” and “What tribe are you?”
Finding His Passion
After eventually settling in Omaha, Nebraska, McClarnon initially felt “floundering” until, “on a whim,” he auditioned for a community theater production of Jesus Christ Superstar in Council Bluffs, Iowa. This experience ignited a passion for acting, providing a sense of community and purpose. He credits local talent agent John Jackson with helping him begin his professional journey.
Hollywood Journey
McClarnon moved to Los Angeles in the mid-1980s, initially drawn to the music scene. He eventually returned to Omaha before deciding to pursue acting professionally. He secured representation and began booking guest roles on major television shows, including Baywatch, Walker, Texas Ranger, and NYPD Blue, throughout the 1990s and early 2000s.
Developing His Craft
Between roles, McClarnon dedicated himself to studying acting, falling in love with the process and the discipline of character work. From 2012 to 2017, he had a recurring role as Lt. Mathias on A&E’s Longmire, which led to his current roles in Reservation Dogs and Dark Winds.
Balancing Roles and Representation
McClarnon acknowledged the initial concern of playing two police officers simultaneously but believes he successfully differentiated the characters. He emphasized the importance of portraying Native people as “regular people” and highlighted the heart of Dark Winds as the relationship between Joe Leaphorn and Emma Leaphorn. He noted the current positive trend in Native representation in the entertainment industry.
