Public Execution Carried Out in Yemen's Capital
Yemen carried out the public execution of a barber in the capital city of San’a on Monday, July 6, 2009. The execution followed the man's conviction for the heinous crimes of raping and killing an 11-year-old boy.
The victim had reportedly visited the barber's shop seeking a haircut when the crime occurred. Hundreds of citizens reportedly gathered in the area surrounding the central prison to witness the event.
Details of the Crime and Conviction
According to reports from the Yemen news agency, Saba, the barber was apprehended in December 2008. During a trial held in January, the accused confessed to the charges against him.
The confession detailed that the barber raped the child inside his salon. Following the assault, he murdered the boy, dismembered the body, and subsequently disposed of the remains outside of San’a.
The Execution Scene
Photographs from the execution on Monday depicted the scene in San’a. The convicted man, identified as Yehya Hussein, was seen lying face down on a large piece of red cloth.
His hands were bound behind his back as a Yemeni police official stood over him. The official then reportedly shot the man four times using what appeared to be a machine gun to carry out the sentence.
