Cam Schlittler delivered another masterful performance, throwing 6 ⅔ shutout innings to lead the New York Yankees to a 5-3 win over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at T-Mobile Park. This victory secured the series for the Yankees while extending their remarkable run of pitching dominance to begin the season.
Yankees Starters' Historic Start
Schlittler retired the final 15 batters he faced and would have pitched deeper had he not been on a pitch count. He became the fourth Yankees starter to not allow a run in their first six games – two by Schlittler and two by Max Fried. Yankees starters have collectively given up only two runs across their first six games, the fewest by any team’s starting rotation through the same period.
Bullpen Drama and Late-Game Heroics
The Yankees bullpen faced a tense situation late in the game. Camilo Doval loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth inning, and Cal Raleigh followed with a two-run single off David Bednar, narrowing the Yankees’ lead to 4-2. Bednar then struck out Julio Rodriguez to end the inning.
Ben Rice added a crucial run in the top of the ninth with his first home run of the season, providing some breathing room. The Mariners responded with another run in the bottom of the ninth, but Bednar secured the final out on his 40th pitch, sealing the 5-3 victory.
Schlittler's Performance and Offensive Support
Across 79 pitches, Schlittler allowed just two hits and struck out seven batters. He has yet to walk a batter this season, allowing only three runners to reach base in 11 ⅓ scoreless innings. Ben Rice, also from Massachusetts, continued his strong performance, going 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI double, and his ninth-inning home run.
Goldschmidt's Early Power Surge
Veteran first baseman Paul Goldschmidt contributed with a three-run home run off right-hander George Kirby in the first inning, extending the Yankees’ lead to 4-0. The rally was set up by walks from Trent Grisham and Rice. Goldschmidt, who hit only three home runs against right-handed pitchers last season, went deep in his third at-bat against Kirby.
For the second consecutive game, the Yankees scored in the top of the first inning with two outs. Cody Bellinger started the rally with a walk and a stolen base – his second in as many games.
