Yankees Maintain Planned Rest for Giancarlo Stanton

Even after a remarkable start to the 2024 season – going 10-for-20 through his first five games – New York Yankees designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton was not in the starting lineup for Wednesday’s series finale against the Seattle Mariners and right-handed pitcher George Kirby at T-Mobile Park.

Boone Emphasizes Long-Term Approach

Yankees manager Aaron Boone explained that the decision was pre-determined and part of a larger strategy to manage Stanton’s workload. The team intends to give the 36-year-old semi-regular days off to ensure his health over the course of the season. This approach proved successful last year after Stanton joined the team in June following recovery from a bout of tennis elbow in both arms.

Stanton's Early Season Success

“This was the day we had marked with him,” Boone said before the game. “He and I talked about it a few days ago. Just wanted to stay disciplined to that, be smart here. Obviously he’s off to an amazing start. Hate having him out of that lineup, but doesn’t mean he won’t have the most important at-bat today.” Boone added that Stanton would be available off the bench in a crucial situation.

Benefits of Proactive Rest

Boone acknowledged that Stanton’s strong performance made it difficult to bench him, but reiterated the importance of planned rest days. He believes that strategically managing Stanton’s playing time will increase his availability throughout the season. “I think the way we had those days in there kept him available regularly,” Boone stated.

Lineup Adjustments

Ben Rice took over as the designated hitter on Wednesday, while Paul Goldschmidt started at first base. Amed Rosario also started at third base in place of Ryan McMahon, who has been off to a slow start.
