The world’s tallest college basketball player, 7-foot-9 center Olivier Rioux, is leaving the University of Florida. Rioux officially announced his decision to enter the NCAA transfer portal on Tuesday after two years with the Gators program.
Rioux's Limited Playing Time at Florida
A Decision Based on Future Opportunity
Rioux stated that the move came after careful reflection on his journey and what is best for his future career. He shared this decision via an Instagram post, confirming his entry into the portal.
As a true freshman, Rioux utilized a redshirt season while the team secured the national championship. This past season, he saw limited action, playing in only 15 total minutes across games.
On-Court Production and Practice Role
During his time on the court, Rioux recorded seven points, six rebounds, and one assist. He had previously chosen the redshirt option to focus on developing his game.
Coach Golden had indicated before the season that Rioux would primarily see playing time late in games that were already decided due to the return of all four frontcourt players. Rioux welcomed the challenge of practicing against established players like Alex Condon, Thomas Haugh, Rueben Chinyelu, and Micah Handlogten.
A Record-Breaking Height
Standing Above the Competition
Before even stepping onto the Florida campus, Rioux held the Guinness World Record as the world’s tallest teenager. Now 20 years old, he seeks an opportunity to play more as a third-year sophomore.
Rioux stands two inches taller than former NBA players Gheorghe Muresan and Manute Bol. He is also three inches taller than notable big men Yao Ming, Tacko Fall, and Shawn Bradley.
Viral Moments on Campus
Despite limited game action, Rioux became a viral sensation on campus. His presence led to unique moments, such as riding his custom-made bicycle and ducking under doorways.
He was also famously seen cutting down the nets during Florida’s NCAA Tournament run while standing flat-footed.
