Workplace Stress Linked to Erectile Dysfunction in Young Men, Study Finds A new study links workplace stress to erectile dysfunction in young men, revealing that high cortisol suppresses testosterone. The findings suggest stress management could be key. A study published earlier this month in the International Journal of Clinical Practice has found a strong link between workplace stress and erectile dysfunction in young men, potentially transforming treatment approaches for the condition. The research tracked about 820 men aged 22 to 40 over several months, recording their stress levels and splitting them into five categories from most to least stressed. More than half of the most stressed men experienced erectile dysfunction, the medical term for not being able to maintain an erection. Dr Ellie, a GP with over two decades of experience, called the figures staggering. She noted that while erectile dysfunction is typically more common in older men, she has seen a growing number of young men in recent years, a pattern observed across the country.Stress Hormones and TestosteroneThe study authors propose that stress triggers the release of cortisol, a fight-or-flight hormone that puts the body on high alert. Over time, elevated cortisol suppresses testosterone, the male sex hormone, making it difficult to maintain erections. The research also tracked cortisol and testosterone levels in the stressed men. It found that when cortisol levels rose, testosterone dropped within a month, and when testosterone fell, erectile dysfunction occurred within six weeks. This provides concrete evidence linking stress to the condition.Until now, erectile dysfunction has often been managed with medication such as sildenafil and tadalafil, better known as Viagra and Cialis. These drugs are effective at helping patients maintain an erection, and a multi-million-pound online market has formed around them. However, they only provide a temporary fix and are not a lasting solution, as they do not address the underlying causes.Beyond Medication: Addressing Root CausesDr Ellie argues that the study shows erectile dysfunction could be solved in many cases by tackling the factors causing it, namely stress. She emphasizes that stress is not nearly discussed enough as a cause of erectile dysfunction or other conditions. There is good evidence that talking therapy and regular exercise can help with stress and prevent excessive cortisol spikes. However, workplace issues such as long hours or a difficult boss may require more than just talking and walking. Stress is also not the only trigger of low testosterone; obesity and excessive alcohol consumption are linked to the problem as well.Patients struggling with erectile dysfunction should consider addressing these risks too. Dr Ellie believes that as a nation, we need to get much better at recognizing and treating stress. Buying erection tablets from online pharmacies is not a long-term solution.Weight-Loss Jabs and Side EffectsIn a related note, Dr Ellie recently learned that many patients on weight-loss jabs take the medication only on certain days of the week. These drugs can help users lose as much as a fifth of their body weight but can trigger uncomfortable side-effects, particularly in the first few months.Common side-effects include nausea, indigestion, or vomiting, which often kick in around 24 hours after the jab. As a result, many patients say they take the jabs just before the weekend so they can be close to home if symptoms occur.
