A routine day on the water near San Francisco took a dramatic turn when a windsurfer collided head-on with a whale. Video footage circulating online captured the moment the athlete was violently thrown from his board after striking the massive marine mammal.

Surreal Collision Off California Coast

Eric Kramer's Close Encounter

The windsurfer involved in the incident was identified as Eric Kramer. The collision occurred while he was riding his board near the San Francisco coastline.

The circulating footage shows Kramer gliding across relatively calm waters just before the gray whale unexpectedly surfaced. The animal struck his board directly, launching the rider into the water in a split-second event.

Aftermath and Rider Reaction

Fortunately, Eric Kramer reported that he sustained no injuries from the impact. The whale also appeared to be unharmed after the unexpected surfacing.

Kramer explained that he had already spotted other whales in the area and had significantly reduced his speed as a precaution. He noted, “It was a ‘whale’ of a day.. Please be cautious and respect wildlife, I had reduced my speed greatly bc I had seen a couple whales in the area but on my last run back it just popped up right in front of me. Glad we are both ok.”

Public Response to the Incident

The video prompted immediate reactions from online observers. Some commenters questioned why Kramer remained in the vicinity after noticing marine mammals nearby.

Concerns were raised regarding established safety guidelines. One user asked, “Hmm- what happened to keeping back 300 ft from marine mammals?” Another questioned his decision to continue sailing after spotting the whales.
